CURRENT PROJECT
Protecting Xsan Seegit: A Wilp Cumulative Impact Assessment
Funding Partner: Real Estate Foundation of British Columbia
Project Duration: August 2025 – September 2026
The Gwinoop School of Law and Land-based Learning Society is undertaking a Wilp cumulative impact assessment of the proposed Prince Rupert Gas Transmission (PRGT) pipeline through the Hawaaw territories of Xsan Seegit in the Kispiox Valley. The project examines how the proposed development may affect the lands, waters, wildlife, cultural sites, and harvesting areas that sustain the Hawaaw family.

Gathering at Gwinoop: Learning Gitxsan Law on the Land
Project Partners: Queen’s University and Haverford College
Project Duration: 2026–2027
The Gwinoop School of Law and Land-based Learning Society welcomed scholars from Queen’s University and Haverford College to Gwinoop for a three-day land-based gathering exploring Gitxsan law, governance, and ethical research partnerships.

Reclaiming Gwinoop: Preparing the Ground for Renewal
Funding Partner: TD Friends of the Environment Foundation
Project Duration: 2026–2027
The Gwinoop School of Law and Land-based Learning Society is restoring the historic Gwinoop fishing site through the creation of a community garden and outdoor learning space. After more than a generation of brush, invasive vegetation, and overgrowth, the project has become the catalyst for reclaiming this important cultural place for community use.

Returning to the Smokehouse: Revitalizing Gitxsan Food Traditions
Funding Partner: ISPARC Food Systems Program
Project Duration: 2026–2027
The Gwinoop School of Law and Land-based Learning Society is strengthening Gitxsan food sovereignty by supporting the transmission of traditional salmon harvesting, smoking, preservation, and food preparation practices.

Revitalizing Gitxsanimx Through House-Based Knowledge
Funding Partner: First Peoples’ Cultural Council
Project Duration: 2026-2027
The Gwinoop School of Law and Land-based Learning Society is documenting the child naming traditions of Wilps Git’tsim’gedimgyat to support the revitalization of Gitxsanimx within the House. The project records the language, teachings, kinship relationships, and governance practices that guide how Gitxsan names are selected and carried.
