Gathering at Gwinoop:

Learning Gitxsan Law on the Land

FUNDING PARTNER

Queen’s University and Haverford College

PROJECT DURATION

2026 – 2027

Project Overview

The Gwinoop School of Law and Land-based Learning Society welcomed scholars from Queen’s University and Haverford College to Gwinoop for a three-day land-based gathering exploring Gitxsan law, governance, and ethical research partnerships.

Guided by Gitxsan House families, Elders, and Knowledge Holders, participants learned about Gitxsan oral histories, governance, seasonal harvesting practices, and the responsibilities that connect people to the land. The partnership was led by Dr. Lisa Guenther of Queen’s University, with Dr. Jill Stauffer of Haverford College serving as a collaborator.

The gathering strengthened relationships between Gwinoop and its university partners while establishing a foundation for future Indigenous-led research collaborations.
