Project Overview

The Gwinoop School of Law and Land-based Learning Society is strengthening Gitxsan food sovereignty by supporting the transmission of traditional salmon harvesting, smoking, preservation, and food preparation practices. Supported by the ISPARC Food Systems Program, the project is expanding Gwinoop’s capacity to host land-based food harvesting and preservation activities.

Seasonal gatherings will bring together Elders, Knowledge Holders, experienced fishers, and House families to share teachings on harvesting, filleting, smoking, drying, preserving, and preparing salmon. These gatherings create opportunities for House members living both within and away from their territories to reconnect with Gitxsan food traditions while passing these skills to younger generations.

The project also provides equipment to support fish harvesting, food preservation, and community programming, helping ensure these traditions continue to be practiced and shared at Gwinoop for years to come.
