Project Overview

The Gwinoop School of Law and Land-based Learning Society is restoring the historic Gwinoop fishing site through the creation of a community garden and outdoor learning space. After more than a generation of brush, invasive vegetation, and overgrowth, the project has become the catalyst for reclaiming this important cultural place for community use.

The restoration has been guided by Darlene Vegh, Gitxsan Elder and Knowledge Holder, whose landscape assessment identified opportunities for ecological restoration and the future planting of Indigenous berries, medicinal plants, and other culturally important species. Working alongside her, Gary Vegh, an experienced farmer and construction professional, has led the clearing and preparation of the site, laying the foundation for future garden beds and outdoor learning spaces.

The community garden is currently under development and will be ready for the next growing season, creating new opportunities for food production, environmental education, and land-based learning.
