PROJECT DURATION

2026 – 2027

Project Overview

The Gwinoop School of Law and Land-based Learning Society is documenting the child naming traditions of Wilps Git’tsim’gedimgyat to support the revitalization of Gitxsanimx within the House. The project records the language, teachings, kinship relationships, and governance practices that guide how Gitxsan names are selected and carried.

Recorded conversations with hereditary leaders, fluent speakers, Elders, and Knowledge Holders are being transcribed and reviewed with the support of Xsiwis (Dr. M. Jane Smith).

The project will produce a House-based Gitxsan Naming Guide together with audio, video, and written language resources that support intergenerational language learning.
